Vernon Joseph Akers

Deacon Vernon J. Akers, son of the late Philbert J. Akers and Carrie White-Akers was born on October 2, 1923, in Augusta, IN. He was the middle child in the family of 12 children. He attend IPS School 83 and Crispus Attucks. At an early age, Vernon accepted Christ into his life.

Upon completing a tour of duty in the U.S. Army, Vernon united in holy matrimony with Beulah Mae Phillips. To this union five children were born—John Charles, Mathilda, Philbert, Alonzo and Vernon, Jr. In July of 1960, Beulah went on to be with the Lord.

In 1968, Vernon met beautician Julia Frances Walker and he united in marriage with her in July of 1969. They loved to travel, dance and attend church. Julia preceded Vernon in death on February 16, 2003. In 1983 Vernon was ordained Deacon, under Rev. Benjamin Sims at Mt. Paran Baptist Church. In 2002, he united with Mt. Nebo Baptist Church under the leadership of Rev. Hilton Hudson.

In 1983, after spending 35 years with Indiana Bell - Ameritech. Vernon retired and used his gift of “helps” to assist others in whatever capacity needed: volunteer, yardman, handyman, chauffeur or a good friend. However, once his work was done, you could always locate him in his favorite recliner in a prone position with his remote in his hand. Vernon fully enjoyed his retirement, with the decline of years he had to slow down, he never complained and often reminded others “that it could be worst.”

Vernon was always in great spirits, and faithfully prayed and witnessed to others as long as he could. God called him home on Tuesday, February, 21, 2012 at the age of 88 years old. He was preceded in death by daughter Mathilda Akers, and three sons Alonzo, Vernon, Jr., John Charles Akers, and nine siblings: Dorothy Akers, Alberta McCannon, Willa Bell Jones, Maria Stuart, Vera Miller (twin to Vernon), Philbert Akers, Jr., George Akers, and Dora Broach.

Vernon leaves to cherish his memory two sons: Philbert and Joseph Akers. He is also survived by three siblings Thelma Akers, Mary Torrence and John Akers. Three grandchildren/caregivers; Tina Williams (John), Kenneth and Timothy Akers, and stepchildren Zoe Walker-Gaines, Harry and Thomasine Walker. Deacon Akers had thirteen grandchildren, and a host of great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, family and friends.
